A storybook in the tall grass

Stories, drawings and memories of two good dogs who found each other where the grass goes on and on.

Chapter one

Meet Kato & Sooner

They never crossed paths on Earth. One was Dad’s dog in Nebraska; the other was adopted from a pound in Oregon. But wherever good dogs go, they found each other.

Chief Explorer & Question Asker

Kato

Kato has never met a hill he didn’t want to see over. He leaps first, asks questions in mid-air, and wags with his whole back half. He left an Oregon pound with a lot of catching up to do, and he has been at it ever since.

  • Curious
  • Sunny
  • Always mid-leap

Field notes

Loves
Tall grass, good sticks, and the words “What’s over there?”
Signature move
The head tilt, followed closely by the leap.
Known for
Trying to point at a rooster. (The rooster won.)
“What’s over there?”
— Kato

Napper, Deadpan Philosopher & Occasional Troublemaker

Sooner

Sooner says as little as possible, and it’s always enough. He belonged to a boy in Nebraska, keeps his dignity in any weather, and tries most things… after a nap.

  • Unhurried
  • Dry-witted
  • Loyal to the bone

Field notes

Loves
Sunny patches, warm stones, and a very good stick.
Signature move
The slow tail sweep.
Known for
Flying, once. He does not discuss his technique.
“I try most things after a nap.”
— Sooner
